4 Cutting-Edge Building Materials Used For Structures Of Tomorrow

Building materials are at the core of building a structure. From building with concrete to steel, glass to plastic and wood to bricks; several materials are available for construction. But do you about the next generation materials? Yes, a wide range of materials are discovered for repurposing the old ones to create thinner, smoother and curvier structures of tomorrow.

In the 20th century, concrete was the preliminary material used for structural construction. But today, advancement in technology and construction has made it possible to build structures that are extraordinarily splendid and one of their kind using several. All thanks to the discovery of modern materials; buildings in the near future shall be fascinating than ever. So, let's have a look at these new generation building materials:

    1. Smart Glass:

As the name suggests, the material comes with unique features and characteristics to make it ‘smart’ enough and control the flow of natural light inside the building. There are several kinds of smart glasses:

    • Self-cleaning: This type of smart glass is coated with micro-level, non-stick coating or UV activated catalyst. It helps in cutting oils of grease marks into carbon dioxide and water.

    • Solar Sensitive: This type of glasses are sensitive to sunlight. They darken when the sunlight increases to reduce the glare and control temperature inside.

    • Photochromatic Glass: This type of glass allows only certain amount of light to pass through it. The energy from sunlight gets scattered into random positions of the glass and blocks a substantial amount of light.

    • Electrochromic Glass: This type of glass is activated when a current is run through them. On activation, they darken after few minutes to block about half of the natural light through them.

    2. Metal Sponges:

Skyscrapers are constructed in huge numbers today as the availability of land has reduced with the increase in population. With building tall skyscrapers, there comes a responsibility to make it stable and rigid enough so that it can withstand external as well as internal forces acting on it. Luckily, materials like ‘metal sponges' comes to rescue when you want to provide strength to tall structures.

In 2011, metal sponges came into picture by the name ‘micro-lattice'. Researchers developed this material by depositing metal onto a polymer framework which then gets etched away. These sponges possess a special characteristic of regaining their original shape after being compressed to nearly half of their size. They act as shock absorbers providing strength to skyscrapers. This material is a lightest solid building material in existence.

    3. Wood & Timber:

Till now, wood was used as a construction material for creating furniture, doors, and windows; but using it for creating an entire building is pretty much a new concept. This is a new trend where designers are using wood with softwood timber to build buildings. In Melbourne and Bergen, buildings with 10 to 14 stories are constructed purely from laminate wood.

Apart from these, there are several discoveries made in the construction materials to reform the way buildings are built today. Making buildings with these materials is as important as the Structural Analysis Design. Structural design and plan are responsible for strength and stability of a structure. A sustainable structure is built only with proper structural analysis design.

Role of CAD in Structural Drafting

Computer Aided Designing/Drafting (CAD) is an integral part of Structural Engineering Services. This designing or drafting process is nothing but a representation of building in two dimensions. In this technically advanced age, drafting is done using computers rather than creating it manually. Initially, engineers lay out the first set of drawings which is then detailed out including all the parameters.

A Structural CAD Drafting process involves one or more following functions to be carried out by structural engineers using CAD software:

    • Drawings for foundation plan and footing
    • Bar bending schedule for Rebar
    • Detailing of stairs, handrails, slabs, roof truss and joints
    • Drawings for prestressed components

What are the benefits of structural CAD drafting over traditional methods?

    1. Data storage:

In case of manual drafting, documents are filed and stored in folders. But this is not the case with CAD drafting, as the drawings can be stored easily on the computer server. This drawing information can then be accessed as and when required. This gives a benefit of environment-friendly storage as well as reducing the risk of losing documents.

    2. 3D visualization:

3D models created using AutoCAD software allows for effective visualization. Although it can also be created manually, CAD saves a lot of time and the results generated by it are incomparable to the manual ones.

    3. Reduced revisions:

In the manual method, chances of errors are high. Compared to this, CAD generates drawings with fewer errors. Also, whenever there is a need for revision, the manual method involves erasing and creating it again. This can be simplified to a great extent using computer designs.

    4. Time-saving:

CAD allows for creating designs much faster than the manual drafting. This saves a lot of time which can be utilized for other important tasks. Also, modification done in one part can be penetrated to other parts of the models. This is not possible in manual methods. For example, if there is a mistake in one part of Steel Fabrication Drawings, one needs to erase and literally draw each line of error. The same is completed with a mouse click using CAD.

Other advantages:

    • It allows for the conversion of ordinary design drawings from jpg, pdf, png, dxf to CAD files.
    • Simplify the generation of drafting documents for structural engineers.
    • These drawings can be generated with a high level of accuracy.
    • Allows for the modifications to be made in the existing designs as well.
    • It allows estimating bill of materials (BOM) in a better way. This helps in saving extra expenses.
    • A lot of time is saved through CAD drafting compared to old traditional methods. This increases productivity and saves resources.
    • It allows for easy sharing and transferring of information between team members.

4 World Famous Structures with Unique Designs

The Structures are an important part of the society. While some have historical importance, others have religious values associated with them. Others are used for a miscellaneous purpose. Whenever we visit some far across places, the first thing that comes to our attraction is its famous structures.

Structures require to be built with utmost accuracy and precision otherwise it will lead to a failure. Structural engineering services from reputed companies and engineers will provide a vision to build successful masterpieces.

Here’s a short list of such masterpieces in the world:

  1. The Dancing House, Prague:

Nicknamed as “The Dancing House”, the Nationale Nederlanden building is situated in Prague. It is sometimes referred to as “Fred and Ginger”, named after two world-famous dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

The building has a unique dancing shape made up of 99 concrete panels, each with different dimension and shape. It has a restaurant, a gallery, a conference center and office premises. Most importantly, it has a terrace for sightseeing from where one can have a wonderful view of Prague.

  1. Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin

The Milwaukee Art Museum is situated near Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. It was initially designed by Eero Saarinen as a war memorial in 1957. Then came the Kahler Building designed by David Kahler in 1975. And at last, Santiago Calatrava designed the Quadracci Pavilion in 2001. At shore level, the structure houses an atrium, a gallery space for exhibitions, an education center with 300 seats, and a gift shop. It also has a restaurant with 100 seats from where one can enjoy the view of the lake.

The design is inspired by many natural elements like moving steel louvers inspired by the wings of a bird. A cabled bridge with a mast inspired by a sailboat and a curving galleria inspired by a wave.

   3. Lotus Temple, New Delhi

The Lotus Temple is situated in New Delhi and it is a place of worship for Bahá'í. The place has a capacity of 2500 people with nine sides and nine doors. The whole temple resembles a lotus flower with 27 petal-like structures. The central hall of this temple is as high as 40m. It has the surface made from the white marble of Mount Pentelicus in Greece. Since its creation, it has become one of the most visited structures of the world.

  1. Cologne Cathedral, Cologne

It is the greatest Gothic cathedral in Germany and it is a seat of the Catholic Archbishop. Once it was the world’ tallest building with a high five-aisled basilica. Its construction started long back in 1248 which was stopped in 1473. The work was resumed only in the 19th century and it got completed in 1880.

It showcases several works of art. The exterior of the cathedral has seven feet gilded silver and jewels. The interior has Sarcophagus of the Magi which is a gilded sarcophagus. Three golden-crowned skulls are placed inside and it is believed that they belong to the Three Magi.
