A look into Steel Detailing Process

Steel detailing is a pivotal and multifarious step in the process of developing anything made out of steel be it a basic building, modern plants, spans, lifts, air dealing with units, and non-building structures. It is an extremely basic process and requests intensive precision. Structural steel detailing is an important and mandatory process in all types of manufacturing and construction activities. The line of process requires a number of following steps:-
  • The structural engineer and/or architect conceive an idea about a project and put it on paper in a general way. These drawings could also contain items linked to mechanical systems which pertain to the fabrication of the steel members.
  • Next in the detailing process, the steel detailer takes these design/ drawings and transforms them into meticulous diagrams for each steel piece.
  • The Detailer then produces drawings and plans for the making and erection of steel members such as beams, trusses, columns, braces, stairs and handrails, metal decking and joists etc.

With the ever-shifting market demand, the need to stay ahead requires innovation and sustainable strategy. The technologies used in CAD Steel Detailing are computer- aided design or CAD; earlier, manual drafting methods were used. The process also involves 3D Modeling Technique which is an advanced version of 2D drafting. 3D provides a better visualization and insight into the project. 3D Modeling can be done with software like X- Steel, AutoCAD and Microstation.
In steel detailing, the detailer’s drawings covering the making of the steel pieces are called Shop Drawings. They distinguish the exact particulars for creating every part/bit of a structure. With steel detailing, once the steel fabricator produces the steel members, the steel detailer steps in again and produces the drawings for the erection of the steel members in the field. These are called erection drawings.

It is the building site steel erector who alludes to these illustrations in the steel enumerating process, so as to know how and where to work with the created steel pieces. Included in the erection drawings are dimensional plans to identify the steel members, in addition to all work required on the site including welding, bolting, and installing masonry anchors.
Structural Steel detailing  high precision professional experts as these drawings must be able to define and detail intricate tasks, the widespread usage of latest CAD technologies and 3D software has improved the quality, speed, and accuracy of structural steel detailing. It has made exact drawings in 3D format has become easy and affordable than complicated manual detailing.

Structural Engineering Services  has risen as a basic segment of open, business and mechanical developments where steel components are overwhelming. Appropriate from modern structures to private and shopping edifices, the technique is broadly depended on design quick and mistake. Devoted experts prepared in itemizing principles and CAD guarantees more noteworthy accuracy and quicker finishing of basic steel specifying.

Role of CAD in Structural Drafting

Computer Aided Designing/Drafting (CAD) is an integral part of Structural Engineering Services. This designing or drafting process is nothing but a representation of building in two dimensions. In this technically advanced age, drafting is done using computers rather than creating it manually. Initially, engineers lay out the first set of drawings which is then detailed out including all the parameters.

A Structural CAD Drafting process involves one or more following functions to be carried out by structural engineers using CAD software:

    • Drawings for foundation plan and footing
    • Bar bending schedule for Rebar
    • Detailing of stairs, handrails, slabs, roof truss and joints
    • Drawings for prestressed components

What are the benefits of structural CAD drafting over traditional methods?

    1. Data storage:

In case of manual drafting, documents are filed and stored in folders. But this is not the case with CAD drafting, as the drawings can be stored easily on the computer server. This drawing information can then be accessed as and when required. This gives a benefit of environment-friendly storage as well as reducing the risk of losing documents.

    2. 3D visualization:

3D models created using AutoCAD software allows for effective visualization. Although it can also be created manually, CAD saves a lot of time and the results generated by it are incomparable to the manual ones.

    3. Reduced revisions:

In the manual method, chances of errors are high. Compared to this, CAD generates drawings with fewer errors. Also, whenever there is a need for revision, the manual method involves erasing and creating it again. This can be simplified to a great extent using computer designs.

    4. Time-saving:

CAD allows for creating designs much faster than the manual drafting. This saves a lot of time which can be utilized for other important tasks. Also, modification done in one part can be penetrated to other parts of the models. This is not possible in manual methods. For example, if there is a mistake in one part of Steel Fabrication Drawings, one needs to erase and literally draw each line of error. The same is completed with a mouse click using CAD.

Other advantages:

    • It allows for the conversion of ordinary design drawings from jpg, pdf, png, dxf to CAD files.
    • Simplify the generation of drafting documents for structural engineers.
    • These drawings can be generated with a high level of accuracy.
    • Allows for the modifications to be made in the existing designs as well.
    • It allows estimating bill of materials (BOM) in a better way. This helps in saving extra expenses.
    • A lot of time is saved through CAD drafting compared to old traditional methods. This increases productivity and saves resources.
    • It allows for easy sharing and transferring of information between team members.

10 Advantages of Precast Structures

Compared to site-cast structures, precast structures have more advantages. Let us have a look at these advantages:

    1. High Quality:

Precast concrete structures are cast in a controlled environment. Hence, these structures have high quality compared to site cast structures. Precast structures do not have problems related to dust, humidity, temperature changes, or unreliable quality of materials.

    2. Low Maintenance:

Precast panels or precast structures have a long lifecycle with reduced costs. The precast structures have uniform quality, fewesr risks of cracks or damage, and low maintenance costs.

    3. Easy Installation:

Precast panels are built in the factory itself and then transported on site where they are ready to be installed. Unlike raw materials that require huge machinery for transportation and installation, precast structures undergo fuss-free installation.

    4. Minimal on-site work:

The precast panels or structures are produced off-site and hence it reduces the complex work on-site. This allows simultaneous activities to be carried out including finishes and interiors.

    5. Speedy construction and Strength:

Precast structures are transported to the site on a timely basis. Hence, the time required for rod bending, and concrete pouring can be saved. Precast structures can be laid within minutes depending on site conditions. Precast structures can be built in days or weeks, unlike site cast structures that require months or years.

    6. Weather and Fire Resistance:

Precast concrete can be used for any weather conditions from scorching heat to freezing cold temperature. Precast concrete has the ability to resist fire as it is non-combustible. It does not require any additional fireproofing application.

    7. Flexible Designs:

Precasting provides flexibility to the designers for creating structural designs. Also, it allows the creation of longer spans without intermediate columns and beams with less use of concrete and steel, unlike conventional design that requires materials in bulk.

    8. Recyclable:

When crushed, pre-casted structures can be reused in one form or the other. It can be used for road construction or construction fill. Recovery rate is much higher for precast structures allowing them to be used for manufacturing a new precast structure altogether. This provides economic and environmental savings.

    9. Water and Sound Resistance:

Precast structures have high thermal mass making them a good choice for sound insulation. They reduce the noise providing a sound barrier against roads and urban noises. Concrete is made up of high-grade cement so the precast concrete structures have higher resistance to water. It can be used to preserve water for irrigation sites.

    10.  Energy Efficient:

The thermal mass of precast concrete absorbs and releases heat slowly thus reducing the energy usage. The heating and cooling costs can thus be reduced by about 30%.

Apart from these, precast structures can also be used in the ducting system to channel air around the building. They act as heat exchangers between rooms having different temperatures.

Tekla is a finnish organization by descent and its experience lies in structural steel detailing through an item called XSteel, one of the first commercial effective 3D detailing applications available, a parametric 3D displaying bundle for specialists, and Tekla Structures was conceived.

Like Revit Structure from Autodesk, Tekla Structures is an srtuctural BIM application, which empowers designers to make savvy physical and systematic structural models for design. On the other hand, it likewise offers an exceptionally competent steel detailing component, combined with precast concrete detailing, reinforced concrete detailing, and into the domains of venture administration.

There are 5 drawing types that can be generated by Tekla Structures: single part drawings, per part (W = workshop), assembly drawings (A = assembly), general arrangement drawings (G = general), multi drawings (M = multi), cast unit drawings (C = cast unit). Tekla depends onthe module that you use that is Steel Detailing (STD), Standard Design (SDE), Precast concrete detailing (PCD) Full Detailing (FUD), Reinforeced Concrete Detailing (RCD).

A rebar or reinforcing bar refers to a common steel bar, which is commonly used in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures. Rebar are generally formed from carbon steel and for better anchoring into the concrete, these rebar are given ridges. Though concrete is very strong in compression, it is weak in tension. By casting rebar into the concrete, this imbalance between compression and tension is nullified.

Rebar Detailing Service is the arrangement of the reinforcing steel in the the concrete structure. It shows the details of the shape, size, number or spacing of bars in any rcc structure, different sections of the structure is taken and the arrangement of the reinforcement.
