4 Cutting-Edge Building Materials Used For Structures Of Tomorrow

Building materials are at the core of building a structure. From building with concrete to steel, glass to plastic and wood to bricks; several materials are available for construction.     In the 20th century, concrete was the preliminary material used for structural construction. But today, advancement in technology and construction has made it possible to build structures that are extraordinarily splendid and one of their kind using several.     1. Smart Glass:

    As the name suggests, the material comes with unique features and characteristics to make it ‘smart’ enough and control the flow of natural light inside the building. There are several kinds of smart glasses:

    • Self-cleaning: This type of smart glass is coated with micro-level, non-stick coating or UV activated catalyst. It helps in cutting oils of grease marks into carbon dioxide and water.

    • Solar Sensitive: This type of glasses are sensitive to sunlight. They darken when the sunlight increases to reduce the glare and control temperature inside.

    • Photochromatic Glass: This type of glass allows only certain amount of light to pass through it. The energy from sunlight gets scattered into random positions of the glass and blocks a substantial amount of light.

    • Electrochromic Glass: This type of glass is activated when a current is run through them. On activation, they darken after few minutes to block about half of the natural light through them.

    2. Metal Sponges:

    Skyscrapers are constructed in huge numbers today as the availability of land has reduced with the increase in population. With building tall skyscrapers, there comes a responsibility to make it stable and rigid enough so that it can withstand external as well as internal forces acting on it. Luckily, materials like ‘metal sponges' comes to rescue when you want to provide strength to tall structures. 

    In 2011, metal sponges came into picture by the name ‘micro-lattice'. Researchers developed this material by depositing metal onto a polymer framework which then gets etched away. These sponges possess a special characteristic of regaining their original shape after being compressed to nearly half of their size. They act as shock absorbers providing strength to skyscrapers. This material is a lightest solid building material in existence.

    3. Wood & Timber:

    Till now, wood was used as a construction material for creating furniture, doors, and windows; but using it for creating an entire building is pretty much a new concept. This is a new trend where designers are using wood with softwood timber to build buildings. In Melbourne and Bergen, buildings with 10 to 14 stories are constructed purely from laminate wood.
