Point Cloud Modeling: A Flourishing Technology in Construction Industry

Point Cloud modeling or Point Cloud BIM is gaining popularity among architects and other professionals. But what exactly is this Point Cloud BIM? Let’s understand it:

Initially, a structure is scanned using laser technique. The scanned data is collected in form of points in the three-dimensional coordinate system. Ths data is stored in a large database called ‘Point Cloud’. Hence, we can say that a point cloud modeling service allows collecting and storing data of a structure in a very accurate digital record.

The scanning of structure takes place in a quick and easy way through the use of lasers which is collected and stored as ‘Scan to BIM’. This scan to BIM service is further used for creating 3D models. Laser scanning offers several benefits. Few of them are mentioned here:

  • A lot of time is saved for scanning through laser technique.
  • A large amount of data is collected in a very short time. Sharing of data becomes quick and easy as well as the speedy discharge of activity on site.
  • Accuracy is also a benefit of this scanning process.
  • Precise off-site fabrication and less on-site changes are the added benefits of scanning.
  • Site revisions can be reduced as it helps in a faster turnaround.

Now that we are through with the scanning part, let us understand what are the benefits of point cloud visualization during the project lifecycle:

  1. During Preconstruction:

  • Point cloud visualization gives a virtual image of the project before even the construction process commences.
  • Owners and engineers can make better decisions with the help of these virtual models during early phases thus relieving them from any confusion after construction starts.
  • A site can be viewed accurately prior to the construction so it gives an early insight into the plan and designs saving a lot of rework afterward.
  • It is the key to cost and time savings on site.

  1. During Construction:

  • Point cloud BIM during construction phase offers a quick check of the project progress. It ensures whether the project is progressing in accordance with the designs or not. Planning also becomes easy with the derived footprints, elevations, sections and 3D models.
  • As the construction begins, the point cloud modeling helps in easy interior fitting, full record scan, 2D floor plan, and more.

  1. Post Construction:

  • As-built records are maintained once the project completes. This is in form of drawings which provide a complete guideline on what is actually built at the end of a project. Point cloud modeling offers easy creation of as-built records.
  • If there are any changes to be made in the project for renovation, then the point cloud BIM comes into play as all the records are maintained in a single database which is easy to handle and manage. Thus, it allows easy renovation of the existing structures.

10 Advantages of Precast Structures

Compared to site-cast structures, precast structures have more advantages. Let us have a look at these advantages:

    1. High Quality:

Precast concrete structures are cast in a controlled environment. Hence, these structures have high quality compared to site cast structures. Precast structures do not have problems related to dust, humidity, temperature changes, or unreliable quality of materials.

    2. Low Maintenance:

Precast panels or precast structures have a long lifecycle with reduced costs. The precast structures have uniform quality, fewesr risks of cracks or damage, and low maintenance costs.

    3. Easy Installation:

Precast panels are built in the factory itself and then transported on site where they are ready to be installed. Unlike raw materials that require huge machinery for transportation and installation, precast structures undergo fuss-free installation.

    4. Minimal on-site work:

The precast panels or structures are produced off-site and hence it reduces the complex work on-site. This allows simultaneous activities to be carried out including finishes and interiors.

    5. Speedy construction and Strength:

Precast structures are transported to the site on a timely basis. Hence, the time required for rod bending, and concrete pouring can be saved. Precast structures can be laid within minutes depending on site conditions. Precast structures can be built in days or weeks, unlike site cast structures that require months or years.

    6. Weather and Fire Resistance:

Precast concrete can be used for any weather conditions from scorching heat to freezing cold temperature. Precast concrete has the ability to resist fire as it is non-combustible. It does not require any additional fireproofing application.

    7. Flexible Designs:

Precasting provides flexibility to the designers for creating structural designs. Also, it allows the creation of longer spans without intermediate columns and beams with less use of concrete and steel, unlike conventional design that requires materials in bulk.

    8. Recyclable:

When crushed, pre-casted structures can be reused in one form or the other. It can be used for road construction or construction fill. Recovery rate is much higher for precast structures allowing them to be used for manufacturing a new precast structure altogether. This provides economic and environmental savings.

    9. Water and Sound Resistance:

Precast structures have high thermal mass making them a good choice for sound insulation. They reduce the noise providing a sound barrier against roads and urban noises. Concrete is made up of high-grade cement so the precast concrete structures have higher resistance to water. It can be used to preserve water for irrigation sites.

    10.  Energy Efficient:

The thermal mass of precast concrete absorbs and releases heat slowly thus reducing the energy usage. The heating and cooling costs can thus be reduced by about 30%.

Apart from these, precast structures can also be used in the ducting system to channel air around the building. They act as heat exchangers between rooms having different temperatures.

Quality Rebar Detailing: A Prerequisite for Reinforced Concrete Structures

Proper designing, rebar detailing and construction together make sure rebar structures do not fall short of strength and quality, to generate cracks or deflection. A high-quality rebar detailing is a necessity when it comes to reinforced concrete structures. Here we will discuss what exactly is rebar detailing and how a rebar detailing company helps a contractor to carry out work successfully.

What is Rebar Detailing?

Rebar detailing is the process of preparing technical drawings for construction. It is usually prepared by contractors and suppliers. It is different from construction documents and provides details for fabrication or installation.

Now that we are familiar with the concept of rebar detailing, let us try to understand why is it fruitful to choose a good detailing company.

A good rebar detailing company often holds following qualities  :

    • A detailing company holding a good profile will have experience in a variety of projects. Achieving expertise in any field is possible through experience only.

    • Such a company will hire skilled and experienced detailers to give the best output. This will ensure that quality will never be compromised when working with such a company for Rebar Steel Detailing service.

    • They will make sure that not only the detailers but also the software used by them is a correct choice or not. They will also develop their own software.

    • Today, most of the companies are using software to generate rebar detailing drawings. But not all of them provide the feature of customization. In certain cases, the clients may come up with special requirements for their project. A good company will welcome such requirements if they have in-house software which can handle the client needs as and when required. Such a company is capable of generating top quality rebar detailing drawings.

    • A good detailing company will also provide an automated platform to its detailers so that any changes can be updated automatically. This will make sure that any changes from client side are fulfilled to the fullest without imposing a burden on the detailers. The detailers can achieve uniform detailing without having several interpretations. The segments of information are integrated and the output is checked at every stage using such platform.

    • Finally, a good rebar detailing company will never fail to address their client requirements. They will make sure all the concerns of a client are answered to give approved quality products and services. Such a company is also capable of generating multiple solutions for a detailing project at any time.

The best rebar detailing company will have practiced all of the above to provide services to its client.
