A look into Steel Detailing Process

Steel detailing is a pivotal and multifarious step in the process of developing anything made out of steel be it a basic building, modern plants, spans, lifts, air dealing with units, and non-building structures. It is an extremely basic process and requests intensive precision. Structural steel detailing is an important and mandatory process in all types of manufacturing and construction activities. The line of process requires a number of following steps:-
  • The structural engineer and/or architect conceive an idea about a project and put it on paper in a general way. These drawings could also contain items linked to mechanical systems which pertain to the fabrication of the steel members.
  • Next in the detailing process, the steel detailer takes these design/ drawings and transforms them into meticulous diagrams for each steel piece.
  • The Detailer then produces drawings and plans for the making and erection of steel members such as beams, trusses, columns, braces, stairs and handrails, metal decking and joists etc.

With the ever-shifting market demand, the need to stay ahead requires innovation and sustainable strategy. The technologies used in CAD Steel Detailing are computer- aided design or CAD; earlier, manual drafting methods were used. The process also involves 3D Modeling Technique which is an advanced version of 2D drafting. 3D provides a better visualization and insight into the project. 3D Modeling can be done with software like X- Steel, AutoCAD and Microstation.
In steel detailing, the detailer’s drawings covering the making of the steel pieces are called Shop Drawings. They distinguish the exact particulars for creating every part/bit of a structure. With steel detailing, once the steel fabricator produces the steel members, the steel detailer steps in again and produces the drawings for the erection of the steel members in the field. These are called erection drawings.

It is the building site steel erector who alludes to these illustrations in the steel enumerating process, so as to know how and where to work with the created steel pieces. Included in the erection drawings are dimensional plans to identify the steel members, in addition to all work required on the site including welding, bolting, and installing masonry anchors.
Structural Steel detailing  high precision professional experts as these drawings must be able to define and detail intricate tasks, the widespread usage of latest CAD technologies and 3D software has improved the quality, speed, and accuracy of structural steel detailing. It has made exact drawings in 3D format has become easy and affordable than complicated manual detailing.

Structural Engineering Services  has risen as a basic segment of open, business and mechanical developments where steel components are overwhelming. Appropriate from modern structures to private and shopping edifices, the technique is broadly depended on design quick and mistake. Devoted experts prepared in itemizing principles and CAD guarantees more noteworthy accuracy and quicker finishing of basic steel specifying.

How can BIM enable Structural & MEP Engineers to gain competitive edge?

Challenges faced by engineers :

MEP engineers face several challenges in the building industry. One such challenge is economy. It has been largely observed that MEP engineers have emerged from this challenge by diversifying their services through BIM. Researchers say that MEP BIM services can better weather economic storm. Another challenge for MEP engineers is to get the architects and engineers in sync with each other to complete tasks. They also face a challenge to incorporate the industrial standards as per owner’s demand for a sustainable design.

Solution:

Due to transition from CAD (computer-aided design) to BIM, design practices in the building industry has changed. More and more AEC firms are adopting BIM approach for MEP. BIM can help MEP engineers to gain an advantage as follows:

    • Create better buildings using more coordinated information
    • Get project insight through design, and analysis
    • Collaborate more effectively

Coordination between Architects and Engineers:

BIM helps to improve the coordination between architects and engineers. With the help of BIM, a change anywhere is a change everywhere. This is because the project information is stored in a consistent and coordinated model. BIM provides MEP engineers with an intuitive design environment to share accurate models and streamlining the design process.

Sustainable Design Goals:

To incorporate the model-based approach for sustainable designs, AutoDesk offers Revit software. Revit allows MEP engineers to conduct early energy analysis, heating and cooling load calculations, and air flow simulations to better understand building performance.

Interference Checking With Other Disciplines:

BIM helps identify potential clashes prior to construction through intelligent model-based information. An example of interference checking: Kohrs Loennermann Heil (KLH) engineers worked on a project for renovating Hebrew Union College Klau Library in Ohio. The project included renovation for a five-story library. The library included tall book stacks to be coordinated with the new duct work, lights, and technology systems. The firm used MEP BIM Services to reduce potential BIM clashes and avoid any costly changes.

Coordination with Design Teams:

In case of structural engineering, when the design change is to be implemented, it affects both the analytical and the physical model. By implementing Structural BIM Services, engineers can analyze structural designs and conduct code checking to ensure the safety of the structure before construction begins. This ensures that architects are communicated for all the changes taking place using Revit software for BIM.

Coordinated Documentation:

For structural engineers, it is important to lay out all the details for fabrication and construction. With the help of Revit software for BIM, it is easy for structural engineers to coordinate different documents from fabrication to construction. What Are The Steel Beam Connection Types? Get To Know Here

A steel structure is made up of assemblies of different members such as columns and beams. Connections are the structural elements used for joining different members of steel structures. Steel beam connections come up with different types. They are mainly categorized into two groups namely seated and framing connections.

In a seated steel beam connection, as the name suggests, the beam is positioned on the seat similar to that of masonry walls. While in framing steel beam connection, the beam is connected to the supporting steel beam element through a fitting.

In this article, we are going to discuss different types of steel beam connections:

Different types of steel beam connections:

    • Bolted seat connections
    • Bolted framed connections
    • Welded seat connections
    • Welded framed connections
    • End plate connections

Bolted Seat Connections
There are two types of bolted seated connections namely stiffened and unstiffened connections:
If the reaction force at the end of the beam is large, then it is recommended to use stiffened connection type as it has the necessary strength to resist these forces. Whereas, in case of unstiffened connection type, there is a limit to resist the forces.
Seat connections are economical to fabricate and it provides immediate support during erection. Apart from this, they do not require much of Main Steel Detailing too. These connections are environment-friendly as the structure having this connection can be dismantled and used in other projects.

Bolted Framed Connections
In this type, steel beams are connected to the supporting elements whether it is a grider or a column with certain connection angle. Commonly, the connection is calculated based on the loads at the end of the beam. A number of considerations are made for while designing this type of connection including strength, type, and size of fasteners and strength of base materials. Also, the minimum length of the connection must be at least half of the web depth. This ensures the stiffness and stability of the connection.

Welded Seat Connections
It is very much similar to the bolt seat connection but to fasten the elements, welding is used instead of the bolts. Like bolt seat, this type of connection can also be categorized into stiffened and unstiffened types. The unstiffened type is used in case of small loads whereas the stiffened type is used in case of larger loads.
Welded seat connection is not so environment-friendly as the structures with this type of connection can neither be dismantled nor erected easily.

Welded framed connections
The weld of the connection depends upon the direct shear stress and stress caused by loads on the beam. So, these stresses are required to be considered. A part of the weld is carried out on-field and hence it is difficult to achieve to quality weld due to the movements of steel members by wind or other factors.

End plate connections
End plate connections are of different types including flexible, semi-rigid, and rigid plate end connection. Fabrication and cutting of this type must be conducted with appropriate accuracy to avoid any errors. End plate connections are not suitable for tall structures.

4 Cutting-Edge Building Materials Used For Structures Of Tomorrow

Building materials are at the core of building a structure. From building with concrete to steel, glass to plastic and wood to bricks; several materials are available for construction. But do you about the next generation materials? Yes, a wide range of materials are discovered for repurposing the old ones to create thinner, smoother and curvier structures of tomorrow.

In the 20th century, concrete was the preliminary material used for structural construction. But today, advancement in technology and construction has made it possible to build structures that are extraordinarily splendid and one of their kind using several. All thanks to the discovery of modern materials; buildings in the near future shall be fascinating than ever. So, let's have a look at these new generation building materials:

    1. Smart Glass:

As the name suggests, the material comes with unique features and characteristics to make it ‘smart’ enough and control the flow of natural light inside the building. There are several kinds of smart glasses:

    • Self-cleaning: This type of smart glass is coated with micro-level, non-stick coating or UV activated catalyst. It helps in cutting oils of grease marks into carbon dioxide and water.

    • Solar Sensitive: This type of glasses are sensitive to sunlight. They darken when the sunlight increases to reduce the glare and control temperature inside.

    • Photochromatic Glass: This type of glass allows only certain amount of light to pass through it. The energy from sunlight gets scattered into random positions of the glass and blocks a substantial amount of light.

    • Electrochromic Glass: This type of glass is activated when a current is run through them. On activation, they darken after few minutes to block about half of the natural light through them.

    2. Metal Sponges:

Skyscrapers are constructed in huge numbers today as the availability of land has reduced with the increase in population. With building tall skyscrapers, there comes a responsibility to make it stable and rigid enough so that it can withstand external as well as internal forces acting on it. Luckily, materials like ‘metal sponges' comes to rescue when you want to provide strength to tall structures.

In 2011, metal sponges came into picture by the name ‘micro-lattice'. Researchers developed this material by depositing metal onto a polymer framework which then gets etched away. These sponges possess a special characteristic of regaining their original shape after being compressed to nearly half of their size. They act as shock absorbers providing strength to skyscrapers. This material is a lightest solid building material in existence.

    3. Wood & Timber:

Till now, wood was used as a construction material for creating furniture, doors, and windows; but using it for creating an entire building is pretty much a new concept. This is a new trend where designers are using wood with softwood timber to build buildings. In Melbourne and Bergen, buildings with 10 to 14 stories are constructed purely from laminate wood.

Apart from these, there are several discoveries made in the construction materials to reform the way buildings are built today. Making buildings with these materials is as important as the Structural Analysis Design. Structural design and plan are responsible for strength and stability of a structure. A sustainable structure is built only with proper structural analysis design.

We are providing Structural CAD Drafting:

Design and drafting being the core services offered by Steel Construction Detailing Pvt. Ltd., reliable structural analysis design is what we offer. How To Choose Perfect Staircase And Handrail Designs?

Staircases and handrails are an integral part of the building design. It is more than an element that connects different heights. It can become the decorative attraction of your house with just a few steps and designs. There are several styles of stair designs, material, and shapes, as well as sizes.

Stair Handrail Design staircase design depends on a number of factors including its style, materials used, space available, and overall style of your house. There are several different designs available for staircases including modern, classic, rustic and artistic that go very well in the interior as well as the exterior of the building.

Staircase Design Forms:

The staircase designs can be classified into following four types:

    • Linear or Single Stage
    • Stairs with a ‘U’ shape
    • Stairs with an ‘L' shape
    • Oblique or circular shape

Each of the types requires a different set of parameters, for example, in some cases a rest stop is mandatory; while in other forms like circular shape, the steps are continuous.

Standard Measurements:

A standard measurement of a staircase step is approximately 29 cm in length (where the foot is placed) and 17 cm in height (counter). These measurements change according to the height of the ceiling of the house.

How to choose a Staircase Design?

As mentioned in the introduction, the designs depend on several factors like style, space, dimension, and decoration. Apart from these, security and functionality are the two factors that need to be taken care of. Here are few tips that may help you in deciding the designs for your next project:

    1. A staircase design should at least 80 cm wide with an angle less than 42 degrees.
    2. It is advisable to use the handrail when the steps are wider than one meter.
    3. For modern designs, both glass and metal are used as a material to give a light aesthetic appearance.
    4. Helical or cylindrical stairs can be used when there is little space available for variation.
    5. A cylindrical stair is not appropriate if there is a requirement to transfer large or huge objects from ground to top floor.
    6. If space is an issue in your building, the space under the staircases can be utilized. Also these days, steps itself can be used as drawers so as to create a good room for storing things. Take these staircase designs into consideration if your house style is modern.
    7. Dimension needs to be taken care of well. If the height considered for staircase is large then stair with breaks are recommended. It the height is small, consider using modern stairs without breaks.

Options for Handrail Designs:

    1. Illuminated Design: The handrails with a backlit LED lighting is a good idea to give a dynamic appearance to space.

    2. Original Handrail Design: The originality of the handrail can be maintained by defining a particular shape for it. When the handrails go in one shape and material without any joints, the finish is homogeneous to create a powerful impact.

    3. Metal Handrail: Metals like steel, aluminum, copper, etc give a very modern appearance to the handrails. The metals can be customized to any shape and hence they are the best kind when the customers want a unique design.

    4. Wooden Handrail: Wood is the best option when you want to give a classic type of handrail to your staircases.

What Is Scan To BIM? What Are Its Benefits?

AEC industry is consistently adopting innovative techniques since years to enhance its productivity. One such technology is Laser Scan to BIM. Application of Scan to BIM is increasing for renovation projects. Data is derived from 3D Laser Scanning and 3D BIM models are generated using this data.

So what is this laser scan to BIM technology? Let’s understand it in detail.

Laser scan to BIM:

The laser scan to BIM process can be split into five consecutive steps:

    1. Survey Control
    2. Laser Scanning
    3. Process
    4. Model
    5. Information

    • Survey Control:

3D survey control markers are set up and co-ordinated on site before the actual scanning process begins. This allows the survey team members to track the information accurately.

    • Laser Scanning:

The actual process of collecting data begins at this stage. For achieving this, 3D laser scanners are used that will relate to the 3D survey control markers. A Point Cloud Data is generated at this stage.

    • Process:

The point cloud data collected by scanning is regularly downloaded and processed at certain intervals. This downloaded data is then compared to the survey control so that the differences can be highlighted.

    • Model:

When the site data is thoroughly checked and verified, it is then submitted to the modelers to build a model for the representation of the data. In this phase, a model for the actual structure is derived.

    • Information:

Once everything is done, the final step is to include all the necessary information required by the clients.

Now let’s understand the benefits of using scan to BIM technology:

Benefits of Scan to BIM technology:

    1. Laser scan to BIM helps to achieve transparency, communication, and collaboration.
    2. The 3D model derived from this technique provides greater performance, quality assurance, and reliability.
    3. This technology helps in reducing the budget to a great extent.
    4. Any alteration in the model can be made with ease and it also helps decision makers to take decisions quickly.
    5. It allows for creating sustainable structures.
    6. Mistakes can be avoided at the early stages of the project lifecycle thus reducing the costs of rework.

Software Benefits:

    1. It allows creating 2D drawings from 3D point cloud data.
    2. It has set of inbuilt tools to create elements like walls, columns, and pipes.
    3. Renovating an old structure is way too easy using this approach.
    4. The dimensions collected using scanning are more accurate and precise to give improved results.
    5. It allows clash detection and eradication.
